Kannada actress arrests at airport with 15kg gold
Information about this came to light on Wednesday (March 5).
Kannada actress Ranya Rao was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) with 14.8 kg of gold at Bengaluru International Airport on the evening of March 3. Information about this came to light on Wednesday (March 5).
Ranya is the stepdaughter of Karnataka Police Housing Corporation Director General of Police (DGP) Ramachandra Rao. She has worked in Kannada films Manikya and Patki. The court has sent her to judicial custody for 14 days.
According to DRI officials, Ranya Rao returned to India from Dubai via Emirates flight. Security agencies were already monitoring her activities, as she had visited Dubai 4 times in the last 15 days.
Ranya had hidden gold in her clothes. Which is worth Rs 12.56 crore. Apart from this, the police also raided her house. Gold worth 2 crores and Rs 2 crore cash was recovered from there.
The Delhi team of DRI was already aware of Ranya's involvement in gold smuggling. Therefore, on March 3, the officers reached the airport two hours before her flight landed.
Attempt to escape from customs through police
According to the information, as soon as Ranya Rao landed at the airport, she introduced herself as the daughter of Karnataka DGP. She also tried to get out of the airport by contacting the local police, but the DRI team took her to the DRI headquarters in Bengaluru for questioning.
Was smuggling in the name of business
During the investigation, Ranya claimed that she had gone to Dubai for business. However, DRI officials suspect that she may be part of a larger smuggling network. Now the investigating agencies are trying to find out whether this has happened for the first time or she has been involved in gold smuggling before.
BJP MLA said "this is misuse of power"
In this case, Congress MLA AS Ponnana said that the DGP's daughter getting caught in such a case is accidental. She is an accused and is involved in smuggling activities. The law will do its job. Whether it is the DGP's daughter, a common man's daughter, the Chief Minister's daughter or the Prime Minister's daughter. Everyone is the same for the law.
