Gujarat to Build High-Tech Food and Drug Lab in Surat for Safer Food and Medicines

Gujarat is setting up a new high-tech food and drug testing laboratory in Surat to make sure people get pure food and safe medicines. The project will cost around Rs 50 crore and will include modern testing facilities. The goal is simple really, faster testing, better safety checks, and stronger action against food adulteration across the state.

Why Gujarat Is Expanding Testing Laboratories

Food safety has become a serious concern in many places. Sometimes adulterated food products enter the market. Medicines too, if not properly checked, can cause harm instead of helping.

Because of that the Gujarat government is expanding its laboratory network. Health Minister Praful Pansheriya explained this plan in the state Assembly while answering questions related to food and drug testing systems.

The main idea is to make testing quicker and more reliable. When more laboratories exist, samples from markets, factories, or pharmacies can be tested faster. That reduces delay and also improves enforcement against those selling unsafe products.

Inside the New Surat Laboratory Project

The new Food and Drug Laboratory in Surat is being built with modern technology and infrastructure. The project will cost around Rs 50 crore. Out of this amount, Rs 17 crore has already been allocated in the current Gujarat state budget.

A plot of around 2,500 square metres has been selected for the facility. Construction plans are already finalised. The building itself will be quite large, around six floors in total.

There will also be a two-level basement parking system. Each floor will contain specialised laboratories designed for different kinds of testing. Some labs will focus on microbiology. Others will handle chemical testing. Cosmetic product testing will also be included.

Modern machines and equipment will be installed to support advanced testing work. There will also be registration counters and other facilities to handle incoming samples smoothly.

More Laboratories Planned Across Gujarat

Surat is not the only place getting a new laboratory. The Gujarat government has also approved new food and drug testing labs in other cities. These include Ahmedabad, Mehsana, Junagadh, and Valsad.

Right now many samples are tested at the central laboratory in Vadodara. Because the number of samples is increasing, that lab sometimes carries heavy workload.

Once new laboratories become operational, the testing pressure will reduce. Samples can be examined closer to where they are collected. This means results will arrive faster.

And faster testing often leads to quicker action against adulterated products.

Stronger Fight Against Food Adulteration

Food adulteration is still a challenge in several regions. Sometimes harmful chemicals or low-quality materials get mixed into food items to increase profit. These practices can seriously affect public health.

With more laboratories and better equipment, authorities will be able to detect such issues more efficiently. Testing becomes more detailed. Enforcement becomes stronger.
