Wife Critical, Husband Arrested: Bengal Health Panel Seeks Police Report
Bengal Health Commission seeks report from Kolkata Police over alleged police excesses as man detained while wife battled for life after surgery.
The West Bengal Clinical Establishments Regulatory Commission has asked the Kolkata Police Commissioner for a detailed report after allegations of police excesses surfaced. A man was reportedly taken away by police while his 25-year-old wife was in critical condition after surgery at a private nursing home. She later died. The commission now wants clarity on why the husband was detained during such a sensitive moment.
The incident has raised serious questions. People are asking whether proper procedure was followed. The matter is now under official review.
Surgery, Complications and Death
According to sources, the young woman was admitted to a nursing home under the Tollygunge police station area. She had stomach-related health problems. Doctors carried out surgery after initial tests. She was under anaesthesia.
Complications reportedly developed after the procedure. Her condition worsened. Despite efforts, she did not survive. Her body has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Hospital authorities have stated that they did not inform police about her medical condition or about her husband being present there.
Husband Taken from Hospital
The controversy began when police officers allegedly took Debnath Bhattacharya, the woman’s husband, from the nursing home while she was still critical. Family members and hospital staff were present at that time, sources said.
He was reportedly kept at Tollygunge police station overnight. The next morning, he was formally arrested. Later, he was shifted to Bhowanipur police station.
Police sources indicate that the arrest is linked to dowry-related charges. However, detailed information about the complaint has not been publicly shared yet. This has added more confusion around the sequence of events.
Health Commission Steps In
On Wednesday, the Health Commission wrote to the Kolkata Police Commissioner. It has asked for a comprehensive report explaining why the husband was taken into custody while his wife was battling for her life.
The commission questioned whether it was proper to remove him from the hospital at that time. It also wants clarity on the timing and grounds of the arrest.
Sources within the panel say there is no record of a complaint from the woman’s family before her body was sent for autopsy. This detail has become important in the inquiry.
The commission has called for a thorough investigation into the entire matter. It wants a clear timeline of events. Every step taken by the police is now under scrutiny.
Questions That Remain
Several questions are being discussed quietly. Was there urgency in making the arrest that very night. Could it have waited. Was due process followed properly. These are the concerns being raised.
At the same time, dowry-related complaints are serious under Indian law. Police are required to act when such cases are registered. So the legal side of the case may also have its own explanation.
Still, the optics of detaining a husband while his wife was in critical condition have triggered public debate. It feels harsh to many, even if legally justified. That is why the Health Commission’s intervention matters.
The final clarity will depend on the police report and post-mortem findings. Until then, this case remains sensitive. A young woman has died. A husband faces arrest. And now, authorities must answer how and why it unfolded in this manner.
