Manali. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has successfully restored the 431-km Manali-Leh National Highway (NH-003), a critical route linking Manali to Leh via Lahaul-Spiti and Ladakh. Typically closed for over five months during winter due to heavy snowfall, the highway was reopened for all vehicular traffic on May 13, 2025, in record time under BRO’s Project Deepak. The Darcha-Sarchu section is also operational, facilitating connectivity to Lahaul-Spiti and Ladakh.
The reopening brings relief to the Indian Army, tourists, and local hoteliers. Lahaul-Spiti’s Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana confirmed the route’s readiness but cautioned travelers about potential avalanches, rockfalls, and adverse weather. “Travelers must remain cautious, and hoteliers should advise guests accordingly,” she said.
Simultaneously, the Rohtang Pass will reopen for tourists on May 14, 2025, despite prolonged snowfall. A daily limit of 1,200 vehicles (800 petrol, 400 diesel) will be permitted, with online permits available at rohtangpermits.nic.in for Rs 550. The reopening of these routes is set to enhance tourism and regional connectivity, though authorities urge vigilance due to unpredictable high-altitude conditions. SDM Manali Raman Kumar Sharma and DSP KD Sharma inspected the Rohtang road alongside BRO officials. Kullu Deputy Commissioner Torul S Ravish issued a notification confirming the pass’s reopening.
This reopening is a major relief for the Indian Army, which relies on the highway for logistical support, as well as for tourists and local businesses, particularly hoteliers who faced challenges due to the prolonged closure. The reopening of both NH-003 and Rohtang Pass marks a significant boost for tourism and regional connectivity. Local authorities, however, continue to monitor weather conditions closely, urging visitors to stay informed and prepared for sudden changes in the high-altitude terrain.
