Delhi-NCR Weather Update: A sudden and dramatic shift in weather patterns has swept across several parts of India, with Delhi-NCR witnessing persistent rainfall since early Friday morning. While the showers have brought significant relief from the rising heat, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cautionary advisory, urging residents to remain alert over the next 24 hours. An Orange Alert has been declared for Delhi and adjoining regions, signaling potentially disruptive weather conditions.

Intermittent Rainfall Across the NCR Region

Rainfall has been occurring intermittently across the entire National Capital Region, including Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Greater Noida, and Dadri. According to the Meteorological Department, the day may continue to witness strong winds, thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and even isolated instances of hailstorms in certain areas. This abrupt change in weather has led to a noticeable drop in temperatures, creating an unusual chill in the air—even in the midst of March.

IMD Extends Alert to 15 States

The IMD has clarified that the weather disturbance is not limited to Delhi alone. Nearly 15 states—including Haryana, Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and parts of Madhya Pradesh—are under alert for moderate to heavy rainfall. In contrast, some southern states are facing even more severe conditions, with Red Alerts issued in select regions due to heightened weather activity.

Record Rainfall in March Lowers Temperatures

Delhi has recorded unusually high rainfall this March compared to the past three years. An average of 9.4 mm precipitation has been observed, bringing the maximum temperature down to 26.8 degrees Celsius—the lowest recorded for this month so far. Continuous cloud cover and cool winds have combined to create a distinctly pleasant and refreshing atmosphere across the region.

What Is Driving This Sudden Weather Change?

According to weather experts, the primary driver behind this sudden shift is an active Western Disturbance, currently positioned over northern Pakistan and Jammu & Kashmir. Its influence has led to heavy rainfall and snowfall in the western Himalayan regions. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation over Haryana is contributing to rainfall activity across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab.

Experts suggest that this system is gradually moving eastward, which may lead to a reduction in rainfall intensity in the coming days.

Heavy Snowfall in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh

The impact of this weather system is especially visible in the hill states. In Uttarakhand, heavy snowfall has been reported in higher altitude regions including Kedarnath and Badrinath. Areas such as Gangotri, Yamunotri, Harsil, and Munsiyari are now covered in a pristine white blanket of snow, while rainfall in lower regions like Dehradun has led to a drop in temperature.

Similarly, in Himachal Pradesh, continuous snowfall is being reported in Manali, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kinnaur. While snowfall has disrupted transportation on several routes, it has simultaneously boosted the tourism sector. Hotel bookings have surged, and tourist footfall is steadily increasing, turning this climatic shift into an economic opportunity.

Relief Coupled with Disruption

At present, the evolving weather conditions across India present a dual narrative. On one hand, the rainfall has provided much-needed respite from the early onset of summer heat; on the other, heavy precipitation and snowfall have disrupted daily life in several regions. While the intensity of this system is expected to gradually subside in the coming days, caution remains essential. For now, the skies demand both appreciation and preparedness.
