INS Vikrant + Rafale M:

A historic $7.4 billion defense deal was signed between India and France on April 28, 2025, under which the Indian Navy will receive 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets. This agreement stands as a testament to the deepening strategic ties between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The deal includes 22 single-seater and 4 twin-seater Rafale M aircraft, with the goal of strengthening India’s naval air power and enhancing its defense cooperation with France.

Why Does India Need Rafale Marine?

The Indian Navy faces increasing Chinese activities in the Indian Ocean region, including a military base in Djibouti, port investments in Sri Lanka and Maldives, and the growing presence of Chinese warships. In such a strategic scenario, India urgently requires cutting-edge fighter jets that can operate from sea and deliver rapid response capabilities. The Rafale Marine fits this need perfectly—it is a multi-role fighter adept at air defense, strike missions, and maritime patrols.

INS Vikrant Lacks Modern Aircraft

Currently, INS Vikrant operates older aircraft like the MiG-29K, which suffer from technical limitations and maintenance challenges, often making them unreliable for critical missions. Until now, India had no modern aircraft—domestic or foreign—that could seamlessly operate from Vikrant. This made the Rafale Marine acquisition vital, enabling the full combat potential of INS Vikrant.

INS Vikrant: A Symbol of Self-Reliant India

Commissioned in 2022, INS Vikrant has become a key part of the Indian Navy and a symbol of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). Weighing nearly 45,000 tons, this aircraft carrier will become even more lethal with the deployment of Rafale Marine jets. A full squadron of 18 Rafale Ms will be stationed on Vikrant, while the remaining 8 aircraft will be kept at a naval base in Goa as operational reserves.

Rafale Marine: A Fusion of Technology and Power

These fighter jets are now fully prepared for maritime operations. The Rafale Marine is specifically designed for carrier-based take-off and landing. Equipped with the STOBAR (Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery) system, it can launch from limited deck space, even during emergencies.

The aircraft comes loaded with advanced technologies such as:

  • AESA radar

  • SPECTRA electronic warfare suite

  • Meteor air-to-air missiles

  • Scalp air-to-ground cruise missiles

Advanced Pilot Training

As part of the deal, Indian Navy pilots will undergo training on state-of-the-art simulators in both India and France. Some pilots are also expected to train aboard France’s Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, enhancing their skills in naval warfare significantly.

Why Is This Deal So Important?

  1. China’s Expanding Footprint in the Indian Ocean China has significantly expanded its presence in the Indian Ocean in recent years. Its military base in Djibouti, investment in Sri Lanka’s Hambantota port, and access to multiple international ports have raised security concerns. Acquiring advanced fighters like Rafale Marine gives the Indian Navy a robust and rapid-response capability in this strategically vital region.

  2. Political and Economic Dimensions While the Rafale Marine jets will be manufactured in France, aspects such as maintenance, component manufacturing, and logistics will be handled in India. This will create local employment and strengthen India’s defense industry.

Sharpening India’s Maritime Security

India’s Rafale Marine purchase is not merely a defense acquisition—it is a strategic declaration. It signals India’s preparedness to adopt a self-reliant, capable, and assertive maritime defense posture. In the coming years, the combination of INS Vikrant and Rafale Marine is expected to become a game-changing identity for the Indian Navy, positioning India as a dominant force across global waters.

This powerful duo may well hoist the Indian flag high across the seas, signifying a bold new era in India’s naval power.
