TMC’s ‘Sampriti Diwas’ vs Kabir’s Babri Mosque Event Sparks Tension in Bengal
Kolkata, Dec 6 (IANS) — West Bengal is set to witness two contrasting political programmes on Saturday, both linked to the anniversary of the demolition of the disputed structure in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992. One is being organised by the ruling Trinamool Congress, while the other will be led by suspended party MLA Humayun Kabir from the Bharat constituency.
On one side, the Trinamool Congress is holding its annual ‘Sampriti Diwas’ (Harmony Day) event at Esplanade in Central Kolkata. The programme, arranged by the party’s youth and student wings, will feature participation from the top leadership.
A state cabinet member said, “Along with an appeal for communal harmony, our leaders will highlight the hardships people in West Bengal are facing due to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision, which is being carried out in an unplanned manner.”
In contrast, Humayun Kabir will oversee the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the ‘Babri Mosque’ at Beldanga in Murshidabad district. The move, which triggered his suspension from the Trinamool Congress earlier this week, has not deterred him from proceeding with the event.
The ceremony will take place under a strong security blanket provided by both the state police and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), following directions issued by a division bench of the Calcutta High Court on Friday.
Reports from Beldanga indicate that thousands of people began gathering at the venue from Friday night. Kabir has been personally supervising arrangements and visited the site several times since Friday evening.
On Saturday morning, Kabir launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying:
“Mamata Banerjee believes only she is right and everyone else is wrong. She must remember that it was the Muslim community that ensured her party’s successive victories since 2011. Now Muslims will dismantle her arrogance in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.”
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari alleged that Kabir’s suspension and his event were nothing but a “pre-planned match” between Mamata Banerjee and her rebel MLA.
Trinamool leaders, however, countered by claiming that the BJP is orchestrating Kabir’s actions behind the scenes.
