New Delhi. The Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) plays a pivotal role in the ceasefire process between India and Pakistan. It is the DGMOs of both countries who held discussions regarding the ceasefire, and their next scheduled meeting is on May 12. Whether in war or peace, the DGMO holds immense strategic importance, as they are responsible for coordinating military operations and maintaining direct communication with their counterparts in other countries.

What is a DGMO?

The DGMO is a senior officer of the Indian Army, typically holding the rank of Lieutenant General. The DGMO is responsible for overseeing all military operations along India’s borders and within the country. They operate at both strategic and operational levels and report directly to the Chief of Army Staff.

The current DGMO of the Indian Army is Lieutenant General Rajeev Ghai, who took over the position on October 25, 2024. On the Pakistani side, the DGMO is Major General Kashif Abdullah.

Role of the DGMO

The DGMO is tasked with formulating strategies and plan for military operations, including those related to war, counterterrorism, and peacekeeping. In times of heightened tension or conflict, the DGMO’s role becomes even more critical. They initiate direct communication with the DGMOs of other countries to de-escalate potential conflicts and manage crises.

The DGMO also acts as a coordinating link for joint operations between the three branches of the Indian Armed Forces—Army, Navy, and Air Force—and other relevant agencies. Additionally, the DGMO works closely with intelligence agencies to integrate actionable intelligence into operational planning.

They manage sensitive border issues, including ceasefire agreements and cross-border tensions. To maintain open channels of communication during high-alert situations, the Indian DGMO holds weekly hotline discussions with the Pakistani DGMO.

In the event of rising tensions, the DGMO takes the lead in initiating dialogue to prevent escalation, clarify intentions, and address immediate concerns of both nations through military-to-military engagement.
