Currently, Shri Brijmohan Agrawal represents the Raipur South constituency in the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly. He is a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and remains a prominent face in the state’s politics. Although he does not currently hold a ministerial post, he actively raises public interest issues and plays an effective role in the assembly as a member of the opposition. Birth and Family Background
Shri Brijmohan Agrawal was born on 1 May 1959 in a respected business family in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. His father, Shri Ramjilal Agrawal, was a resident of Ramsagar Para, Raipur. The family had deep roots in social work, which influenced Shri Agrawal’s personality from childhood.
Education and Ideological Foundation
Shri Agrawal’s student life was also inspiring. During his education, he became associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The discipline, patriotism, and ideology of the Sangh deeply influenced him. This led him to actively participate in student politics through the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). He served as the student union president at Durga Mahavidyalaya, Raipur, and was also a representative of the student union at Ravishankar University. Additionally, he was president at Kalyan Mahavidyalaya, Bhilai. This period laid the foundation for his leadership skills and public relations abilities.
Formal Entry into Politics
After student politics, in 1978, he became an active member of the newly formed Bharatiya Janata Party. During this time, he came into contact with prominent leaders like the late Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Kushabhau Thakre. Inspired by their thoughts and working style, Shri Agrawal made politics a medium for public service. In the BJP’s youth wing, he played important roles as state vice president, general secretary, and national executive member, significantly contributing to the expansion of the organization.
Struggle Before Power
During his tenure in the youth wing, he opposed the policies of then Chief Minister Arjun Singh and showed black flags to him in Raipur. After this incident, he was subjected to police baton charge, was injured, and also had to go to jail. This struggle made him the face of the youth in the state. He strengthened the party through extensive public outreach from Sarguja to Bastar.
Impressive Start in Electoral Politics
In 1990, the BJP fielded him as its candidate from Raipur city for the first time. He won a remarkable victory and reached the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Recognizing his abilities, he was made Minister of State for Local Governance and Urban Welfare in Sunderlal Patwa’s government. Later, he was given independent charge of Science, Technology, and Tourism departments. His work was praised at all levels, and his political stature continued to rise.
A Streak of Continuous Victories
Shri Agrawal won the assembly elections for the second and third time in 1993 and 1998, respectively. During this period, he became the chief whip of the BJP legislative party and, in 1997, was honored as “Outstanding Legislator” by the Madhya Pradesh Assembly. During Digvijay Singh’s government, he strongly opposed the proposal to hand over Chhattisgarh’s diamond mines to the foreign company De Beers and played a role in sending them back from Raipur airport.
Influential Role After Formation of Chhattisgarh State
After the formation of Chhattisgarh state, Shri Agrawal’s political journey became even more dynamic. In 2003, he became MLA from Raipur South for the fourth time and was appointed minister for key departments like Home, Jail, Labour, Culture, Tourism, Religious Trusts, and Endowments in Dr. Raman Singh’s cabinet. In 2006, he was given additional charge of Forest, Sports, and Youth Welfare. Similarly, in 2008, he was elected MLA for the fifth time and entrusted with Public Works, School Education, Parliamentary Affairs, Culture, Religious Trusts, and other departments.
Leading Role in Development Works
After being elected MLA for the sixth time in 2013, he was given departments like Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Water Resources, Irrigation, Religious Trusts, and Endowments. During his tenure, Chhattisgarh received the Agriculture Karman Award for three consecutive years (2014, 2015, 2016). He was also personally honored with the Agriculture Leadership Award. It is said that whichever department he is given, it flourishes under his leadership. His policy-making ability, administrative efficiency, and grassroots understanding have established him as a people’s leader.
Social and Organizational Contributions
Apart from politics, Shri Agrawal has actively contributed to sports, youth welfare, and social activities. He has been president of the Nehru Yuva Kendra, Chhattisgarh. The central government also recognized his experience and appointed him chairman of the advisory committee of the Prime Minister’s Agricultural Irrigation Scheme. Currently, he is a core group member of Chhattisgarh BJP and a strong link between power and organization. Shri Brijmohan Agrawal is known as an honest, hardworking, public servant, and visionary leader.
