Early Life and Background

Arun Kumar Sagar was born on May 1, 1976, in Chavar Khas village, Shahjahanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Shri Chhotey Lal Sagar, belonged to a modest farming family. Growing up in a rural setting, Arun Sagar experienced the challenges of agrarian life firsthand. He completed his intermediate education at Ramsharan Singh School, Phulsanda, Bijnor. Although he did not pursue higher formal education, his deep understanding of political dynamics, leadership qualities, and strong connection with the masses have established him as a mature public representative.

Personal Life

On May 16, 1993, Arun Sagar married Rupa Sagar. The couple has two sons and a daughter. Apart from his political engagements, Sagar is also involved in agriculture and business, leveraging his professional experiences to inform his policy-making endeavors.

Political Career

Initiation into Politics with BSP

Arun Sagar began his political journey with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), emerging as a young leader from the Jatav community in western Uttar Pradesh. He served as the district president of Shahjahanpur BSP unit four times and was twice appointed as the Bareilly zone coordinator. Recognizing his organizational capabilities, in 2008, at the age of 32, he was appointed as the Vice Chairman of the State Construction Corporation, a position equivalent to a Minister of State in the Uttar Pradesh government. This role marked a significant milestone in his political ascent.

2012 Assembly Elections and Departure from BSP

In the 2012 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, BSP fielded Arun Sagar from the Powayan constituency in Shahjahanpur. Despite a strong campaign, he narrowly lost to Samajwadi Party’s Shakuntala Devi by a margin of approximately 4.2% of the votes. Subsequently, on June 15, 2015, he was expelled from BSP on charges of anti-party activities, marking a turning point in his political career.

Joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)

Following his departure from BSP, Arun Sagar joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Acknowledging his organizational skills and regional influence, BJP appointed him as the Vice President of its Braj region unit in 2015. His dedication and commitment to the party’s objectives further solidified his position within BJP ranks.

2019 Lok Sabha Elections: A Historic Victory

In the 2019 general elections, BJP nominated Arun Sagar as its candidate for the Shahjahanpur Lok Sabha seat, replacing the sitting MP and Union Minister Krishna Raj. On May 23, 2019, Arun Sagar secured a resounding victory, defeating Mahagathbandhan’s candidate Amar Chandra Jauhar by a substantial margin of 268,418 votes. He garnered a total of 688,990 votes, marking the largest mandate in the Rohilkhand region.

Role as a Member of Parliament

As an MP, Arun Sagar has been instrumental in implementing various development projects in his constituency. His initiatives have focused on constructing rural roads, enhancing electricity and water supply, improving healthcare services, and advancing educational infrastructure. He has prioritized integrating marginalized communities into the mainstream and has organized employment fairs and skill development programs for youth. Being from an agricultural background, he actively raises farmers’ issues in Parliament.

2024 General Elections: Securing a Second Term

In the 2024 general elections, BJP once again entrusted Arun Sagar with the candidacy for the Shahjahanpur seat. The electorate reaffirmed their support, leading to his re-election with a significant majority. This victory underscores his effective leadership and strong rapport with the constituents.

Political Image and Social Commitment

Arun Sagar is perceived as a grassroots leader who values direct communication with the public. His approachable demeanor and humility have endeared him to many.
