Atletico Madrid moved closer to the Champions League quarterfinals after beating Tottenham 5-2 at home in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash. The match at Metropolitano Stadium turned chaotic very quickly. Atletico scored four goals inside just 22 minutes, taking advantage of Tottenham mistakes everywhere on the pitch. Spurs did manage two goals later, but the damage already done by then.
A Nightmare Start for Tottenham
Tottenham’s plan already looked risky before kickoff. Coach Igor Tudor had openly said he was focusing more on surviving the Premier League than chasing European success.
That decision maybe showed on the field too.
Things went wrong almost immediately. In the sixth minute, young goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky slipped while trying to pass the ball out from the back. Marcos Llorente didn’t waste that gift. He simply took the ball and finished calmly to make it 1-0.
From that moment the game started running away from Tottenham.
The pressure from Atletico felt constant. Spurs defenders looked nervous, small mistakes turning into big trouble.
Atletico Score Three More in Minutes
Only eight minutes after the first goal, another mistake happened. Defender Micky van de Ven slipped while trying to recover the ball. That left Antoine Griezmann running straight at goal with space ahead.
Players like him rarely miss chances like that.
Griezmann finished cleanly to make it 2-0 in the 14th minute. Tottenham barely had time to react when disaster struck again.
Just a minute later another error from Kinsky allowed Julian Alvarez to tap the ball into an open net. Three goals down already, and the clock showing only fifteen minutes.
The stadium crowd could hardly believe what they were watching. It felt like everything Atletico tried was working.
Goalkeeper Substitution Shock
After the third goal, Tottenham coach Igor Tudor made a quick and emotional decision. Kinsky was substituted in the 17th minute and replaced by Guglielmo Vicario.
The young goalkeeper looked devastated. Cameras showed him walking straight down the tunnel while teammates tried to console him.
Moments like that are tough in football. One bad start can suddenly become a nightmare.
Even with the new goalkeeper, the pressure from Atletico kept coming.
Fourth Goal Ends Early Contest
In the 22nd minute, Atletico scored again. Griezmann took a free kick that was flicked inside the box. Vicario managed a quick reaction save, but the rebound fell perfectly for Robin Le Normand.
He headed it into the net without hesitation. Score now 4-0.
At that point the match looked almost finished already. Tottenham players looked stunned, while Atletico fans inside the Metropolitano Stadium celebrated loudly.
Still, Spurs managed to show some fight.
Tottenham Find Small Hope
Tottenham finally got a goal back in the 26th minute. Defender Pablo Porro struck the ball well and reduced the deficit to 4-1.
The goal didn’t change the overall control of the game much, but it gave Spurs at least a little confidence again.
Later in the second half, Tottenham almost scored another. Richarlison came close in the 55th minute, but Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak made a sharp save.
That stop turned out important.
Alvarez Strikes Again
Soon after that chance, Atletico attacked again with speed. Griezmann released Julian Alvarez with a clever pass. The Argentine forward sprinted past the Tottenham defense and finished calmly.
The score became 5-1.
It was a powerful attacking performance from Atletico. Every forward run looked dangerous, and Spurs defenders struggled to keep up.
Late Goal but Big Mountain Ahead
Tottenham did manage one more goal near the end. Jan Oblak made a rare mistake with the ball at his feet. Dominic Solanke reacted quickly and smashed the ball into the net.
The score finished 5-2.
While the goal helps Tottenham slightly, the overall situation still looks very difficult. Overturning a three-goal deficit against Atletico Madrid is never easy, especially in European competition.
For Atletico fans though, the night felt almost perfect. Fast goals, strong attacking play, and a big advantage before the second leg.
Now the pressure shifts fully to Tottenham. The next match will decide if they can produce a miracle, or if Atletico simply finish the job and walk into the Champions League quarterfinals.
