U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that Cuba is the next target for his administration once the current military conflict with Iran is "finished." The remarks came during a White House reception for Inter Miami CF, the 2025 Major League Soccer champions. Flanked by soccer icon Lionel Messi and club co-owner Jorge Mas, Trump used the "Miami-heavy" audience to signal a major shift in Western Hemisphere policy.
Trump stated the U.S. wants to finish this one (Iran) first, but described a move on Cuba as just a question of time. Following his recent rhetoric regarding a friendly takeover of the island, Trump told the audience of Cuban heritage, "You and a lot of unbelievable people are going to be going back to Cuba, hopefully not to stay."
Secretary Rubio’s Role
Trump praised Secretary of State Marco Rubio for doing a fantastic job on Cuba policy, noting that Rubio is currently waiting for the Iran conflict to conclude before escalating efforts on the island. Trump claimed the Cuban government wants to make a deal so badly, echoing his maximum pressure tactics.
Cuba is currently reeling from a severe oil shortage following a U.S. fuel blockade. After the recent U.S. intervention in Venezuela that ousted Nicolás Maduro, the Trump administration has been aggressively blocking oil tankers headed for Havana. This "effective blockade" has crippled the Cuban economy, leading to the President’s assertion that the regime is desperate for a deal.
Choosing the Inter Miami visit to make these comments was no coincidence. The club’s ownership, led by the Mas family, has deep roots in the Cuban exile community. By addressing this specific group, Trump is reinforcing his domestic political support in Florida while telegraphing his intent to the Cuban leadership.
